Provincetown, America’s first destination goes digital
Located on the tip of Cape Cod, Provincetown, MA, has been on the leading edge ever since America was launched with the signing of the Mayflower Compact, and the town is now unveiling a smartphone app as unique as its one-of-a-kind reputation. For instance, it should be no surprise that the button on the app for ‘Useful Information’ depicts the iconic telephone operator played by Lily Tomlin who made « one, ringy, dingy » a classic skit.
Home of the country’s oldest continuous art colony and a model for progressivism, Provincetown has gone digital to make their attractions and features as easy to access as they are to enjoy. The app is named « iPtown » and will feature nearly a dozen different sections to help visitors and locals find services, food and lodging, shopping, special events and happenings around town.
The app will offer hundreds of links to individual business and attraction webpages, and it integrates its functions with social media. « iPtown » will also connect users directly to businesses via phone, and provides directions to anything in town a person could ever want to find. Unlike most apps, iPtown is not a commercial enterprise by a single business that wants to promote itself. Rather, iPtown is a product of Provincetown itself, affording users a boundless tool to explore and enjoy a town that has become well known as a hub of artistic progress, an eco-tourism haven for nature lovers, a clarion call for progressivism, and a playground for anyone who is looking for a good time in a safe environment.
« Everyone who has a special relationship with Provincetown can now become an iPtowner, » said Anthony Fuccillo, Ptown’s director of Tourism. « The iPtown app will not only be a wonderful tool for those new to Provincetown, but it will also be a great resource while there – or for those just daydreaming about a trip to where memories are made. »
It is the approach to the information that makes iPtown a fun tool. Users will have access to a directory of town businesses, a calendar of events, and notifications of town happenings. Weather, emergency services and other useful information are only a finger swipe away. What’s fun is the artistic approach to the information. Using the quaint town architecture as a motif and background, The app boasts images of a Town Crier, Street Artist, Pet Fetching a Frisbee, Cycling Shopper, and a colorful rainbow-covered town scene welcoming the LGBT community, whose members consider Provincetown one of the most welcoming places on the planet.
The iPtown app is free to all and is available on all platforms.
