Speaking of Art with Frankie Rice
By M Sebastian Araujo
Art is Everywhere in Ptown… sometimes it might turn up in a way or place that you just don’t expect it to!
The amazing stone work and designs of Frankie Rice are everywhere! His creative force always made me pause and really want to know more about this talented chap! Recently I had a chance to do just that…

Why Do You Make Art?
I make art because I always have. When I’m working on a new painting, sculpture, photograph or poetry I feel fulfilled. I feel excited. There is always a time in between finishing a peace of work and the next big idea.
Was there ever an Aha! moment when you knew you were an artist?
I don’t know if I ever had an Aha! moment. If I did, I was child and it is long forgotten. I know I an Artist during the in between time. I always feel lost and empty. Then I start to work again and don’t feel lost.

What is it that has attracted creative people like you to Ptown and Cape Cod?
I think what first attracted artist to Ptown was the clay and after that it was the music. I hear even Andy Warhol and the Velvet Underground played at the library. How I wish I was around when Provincetown was about live music, now it seem real instruments are lost. I just started playing the cello this December when my husband and best friend pitched in to get me one for my Birthday.
Who are your favorite Artists and why?
I like a lot of artists for different reasons and it would be impossible to compare them. Louise Bourgeois because of her iron spiders. Robert Gober because of his transitioning. What started as a sink became the severed body of Jesus with water poring from his nipples. Alexander Ross because of his skill.

How lucky we are that Artists like Frankie are still Living Loving and Laughing amid the STUFF of the BIGGER world in or little world set as far out into the ocean as one can walk before falling off in this tiny magical place called Provincetown.
