Speaking of Art with James Frederick

Provincetown is a place that changes with the seasons, often the people who call it home, change along with it.
For sometime now I have seen James Frederick change his creative output into many new in interesting ventures, this Summer he has gone on another adventure in Art…Recently I had a chance to find out just what he has been up to!
How did you come to call Ptown home?
A friend brought me to Provincetown for the first time the summer of 1992, after my husband had died of AIDS that spring. The trip was an amazing and healing time for me to grieve and re-compose myself a bit. I found this little sandbar at the tip of Cape Cod to be a naturally beautiful place filled with loving and accepting people that were making a lot of art. I knew on that trip that I would live here one day. I returned frequently over the next 21 years before moving here in 2014.
What other endeavors have you been up to lately?
I’ve been creating some animations for some design clients which has been fun, and has inspired some things I want to do with my art. I’m still painting like a mad man and doing a few interior design projects. There are a few more books in the pipeline as well.
What made you decide to create a coloring book?
I’ve been drawing comics for two years, many of them focused on my adventures living in Provincetown, so a coloring book of all my favorite places and landmarks here seemed like a natural extension of my work as a cartoonist.
Who is your favorite illustrator/artist and why?
I’d have to say Alison Bechdel. I was fortunate to work with her for a week a couple years ago, and it was a fantastic experience. I love her hand as an illustrator and her voice as a storyteller. The other illustrator/artist that has influenced my work, is my father. I dedicated “Color Me P-Town” to the memory of him, and all the drawing lessons he gave me as a child.
Where do you see yourself in say 5 years?
I see myself right where I am: Making art and living year-round in Provincetown. Like we say back in Southern Ohio where I was raised.. “I feel like a pig in the mud!”
