Founded in 1914 by a group of artists, including Hawthorne, to collect, exhibit and honor the work of Provincetown’s growing arts colony. Today, PAAM houses one of the most important 20th century American art collections. At PAAM, where children under 12 are admitted free, kids and their parents can interact with art by using kid-sized tables equipped with art supplies, take an art workshop, and enjoy free art classes during April vacation week. Admission to PAAM is $5.00, which provides access to five galleries, two outdoor sculpture gardens and the museum’s store. (www.paam.org)

Provincetown is surrounded on three sides by water and is home to some of the best beaches in the country, most of which are accessible by bike trails. At Herring Cove Beach, which is one mile from town, there is beautiful sand, gentle surf for swimming, opportunities for spotting whales in the distance, ample facilities, and great sunsets. Bonfires are allowed with a permit. Race Point Beach, which is two miles from town, is great for families for its Atlantic Ocean surf, facilities, and lifeguard station. Long Point is a local beach favorite. It’s literally at the end of Cape Cod, has a lighthouse, and offers splendid beaches for sunning, swimming, and picnicking. It can be accessed by walking across the West End Breakwater near the Provincetown Inn or by a shuttle boat that runs regularly during the season both from MacMillian Pier and Flyer’s Boatyard in the West End.

Not many town calendars can boast a Carnival Week, international film and theater festivals, a Cabaret Fest, a television show called « Let’s Make A Diva, » a Whale Week and a Bear Week. Only Provincetown, Massachusetts could produce such a datebook.

• June 26-30: Provincetown International Film Festival. The 15th annual Provincetown International Film Festival is dedicated to showing new achievements in independent film and honoring the work of acclaimed and emerging directors, actors and producers.
• July 1-7: Independence Week 2013. World-class DJs and parties make this the most popular July 4th destination on the circuit.
• July 23-27: Girl Splash. The destination summer event for lesbians. Pool party, clam bakes, dune tours, and white hot dances. Come play at the beach!
• August 3-10: Family Pride Week. A chance for children to meet other children with LGBT parents and for parents to meet other parents and share experiences. A parade and plenty of activities for all ages.
• August 18-24: Carnival Week celebrates its 35th birthday! A week-long celebration of the 2013 theme « Viva Las Vegas » that transforms Provincetown into one big party. Boat cruise, inn stroll, music, special events, and of course, the famous carnival parade on the 22nd that attracts over 65,000 viewers and marches the length of Commercial Street.
• September 26-29: Tennessee Williams Theater Festival. Celebrating Tennessee Williams’ legacy with innovative, world-class productions with music performed all over town.
• November 28-December 1: Thanksgiving Weekend. Celebrate the holiday where the Pilgrims landed and give thanks!
• December 6-8: Holly Folly. A Gay and Lesbian Holiday Festival with a shop hop, trolley service, concerts and sing-alongs, the Boston Gay Men’s Chorus concert and an inn stroll.

Here’s a sample of some other memorable events not to be missed.

• The Cabaret Fest (April 12-14) brings together an impressive collection of cabaret entertainers from across the globe, including Dane Vannatter, Lynda D’Amour, Jan Peters, Jessica Curran and Brian De Lorenzo. The festival will feature songs written by Bob Levy.
• The immensely popular annual « Monumental Yard Sale, » takes place May 17-19 throughout the town, and will feature a production of « Let’s Make a Diva! » The show is a tribute to TV, with « Drag Queens on one channel, great dancers and amazing live singers on the other stations. »
• Foodies and art lovers will want to make note of Restaurant Week and Gallery Stroll, scheduled for May 17-22. Local restaurants will offer succulent prix fixe meals and Provincetown galleries will provide special viewings.

In addition, the calendar features dates for the opening of Provincetown landmarks, including the Pilgrim Monument and Provincetown Museum (April 1), the Province Lands Visitor Center which features 360-degree panoramic views of the local dunes, beaches and the Atlantic Ocean (May 1), and the opening of ferry service between Boston and Provincetown (May 17.)

En flânant sur Commercial Street vers le East end, j’ai eu la chance de tomber sur une galerie assez étrange, elle m’a faite pensé à un cabinet de curiosités lié à la mer, au mystère, à l’étrangeté que revêt les lieux de solitude. Car si Provincetown accueille 30 000 personnes l’été, c’est 27 000 de moins l’hiver, autant dire qu’il n’y a personne… Atmosphère décrite à la perfection par Norman Mailer dans son livre « les vrais durs ne dansent pas ».

Accrochées au mur, il y a de magnifiques photos de ces instants d’hommes et de lieux en hiver. Le photographe s’appelle Mischa Richter, lié à Provincetown depuis son enfance, il a eu la bonne idée de regrouper ses photos dans un livre: Saudade, dont les recettes sont intégralement reversées aux bonnes oeuvres de Provincetown.
